Yogācāra

Also known as Yogacara, Vijñānavāda

Mahāyāna Buddhist school, associated with Asaṅga and Vasubandhu, which analyses experience as the workings of consciousness rather than of independent external objects.

Yogācāra is one of the two major philosophical schools of Indian Mahāyāna Buddhism, alongside Madhyamaka. Associated above all with the brothers Asaṅga and Vasubandhu, it gives a detailed analysis of consciousness, and many of its thinkers argued that what we take to be an external world is “mere cognition”. Its ideas spread widely in Tibetan and East Asian Buddhism.
