Empiricism

The view that knowledge comes ultimately from experience, rather than from reason alone.

The British empiricists of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries argued that the mind has no innate ideas and that all its materials come from sensation and reflection. Pressed to its conclusion by Hume, empiricism raised sceptical doubts about causation, the self and induction.
