Philosophy in the Islamic world after the classical period, from the Illuminationist tradition to Mulla Sadra's school in Safavid Iran and beyond.

Histories of philosophy once ended the story of Islamic philosophy with Averroes. In fact it continued to flourish, above all in the Persian-speaking East, where Avicenna’s system was debated, the Illuminationist tradition of Suhrawardi was studied, and in Safavid Iran Mulla Sadra forged a new synthesis whose influence continues in Iran’s seminaries. The start date is a convention.
